Positive and Negative Reinforcement

Together with positive reinforcement, we need to understand the use of negative reinforcement—about using rules and boundaries and how the dog knows what is a wrong thing to do. There is no point ignoring unwanted behaviour as the dog will not understand it is something you do not want them to do.

It is very important for any dog who lives in our home to have a set of rules. This will help you all as a family to get along better. Rules also address the issue of leadership, which the dog will understand better; all dogs need this leadership, although each dog will differ with how much is needed.

With no leadership as guidance to them, the dog will believe they need to take that leadership role if they do not see it in their owners. Someone has to lead, take control, and protect the others.

This is the true goal of balanced style training; it is not about dominance.

It is very important that a dog has a “correction” or to be told “no” when doing something the family does not like and has overstepped the mark. Without realising, dogs are just doing dog things. It is up to each owner to have their own boundaries as each of us has different things that are important. You must be fair at all times; people and dogs make mistakes; shouting and hitting your dog will never be needed.

I had my first 1-2-1 with Karen and my dog, Nala. Karen is very experienced and gave us lots to practise and work on. We look forward to our next session!

We have had several group sessions with our new rescue dog, Buster. She is very good at training us to do and say the right thing to help set boundaries and work on his recall. He has come on leaps and bounds. She gives good feedback and gives hints on what to practise at home. It's all about enforcing the message and being consistent, and she helps us realise where we were going wrong. We are hoping that after a few 1-2-1 sessions, we might one day be able to let him off the lead with confidence.

The best advice I've had for my little dog. In just one week, there has been a massive difference in her training with walking and behaviour with the other dogs at home. Before, she would refuse to walk, no matter what I did, but she is now doing a whole walk on the lead. There are still some issues, but with just a consultation and a week of changes, there is a big improvement, with more improving as training goes on. I would highly recommend it.
