Dog Training Techniques
Working with any of these problems will always be better if you have one to one help and guidance. We can help you understand why your dog is showing you these behaviours and how to resolve it. We can show you how to read your dog, techniques to pass other dogs in a calm manner and in most cases completely eradicate the behaviour around others.
· If you’ve ever struggled with your dog’s barking and lunging on walks, you know the immense frustration this behaviour causes.
· We have found on lead reactivity to be an epidemic problem that’s frequently misdiagnosed and misunderstood, we have created a comprehensive guide for determining:
· Whether or not your dog has on lead reactivity
· Understanding lead reactivity’s causes
· Providing a framework for resolving the problem
The Two Main Causes Of Reactive Dogs
In puppyhood, owner like to allow our pups to say hello to anyone and everyone they pass on the street. This is incredibly reinforcing for most friendly and social pups. Then as they age, we take those greetings away, and your pup is left with unmet expectations, leaving you with a frustrated, reactive dog that desperately wants to say hello. These dogs will be typically highly social and do well with other dogs or people off-leash.
On the flip side of frustrated dogs are our fearful, insecure dogs. These dogs may have been poorly socialized or had a scary experience with another dog. Typically, this scary experience involves an inability to escape. When on a lead it takes away your dog’s ability to choose “flight” – which most dogs will happily take when given the opportunity. So when an off-lead dog attacks your on-lead dog, this can cause an immediate need to use barking, lunging, and other intimidating body language signals to deter other dogs from doing the same. These dogs are typically shy or on guard when meeting other dogs off-lead, although they may eventually warm up to new dogs.
Long Term
For long term, success, I highly recommend a training package of multiple lessons. Training for calmness instead of reactivity. First working focus, then emotional responses, then obedience/communication, then relaxation. We must go one step at a time, teaching both your dog what to do and you how to train and handle your dog though these new skills.
